Children's Library

My goal is to start a small library for the kids at Coke Memorial in Fox Hill. I spent all evening writing the church name in the books I have so far. There are 156 books to go into the library. Now I just need to sweet talk Dad into building a couple book shelves.
If you know me, you know that I'm big into photography. To keep this blog from becoming all photographs I started up a photography blog.

Dad is here!

Well, he got in on the 17th, but I am behind a few days. Neither of us have any groups in right now so we are playing house wife while mum is constantly running around. We've cleaned the apartment top to bottom. We also end our days by swimming. I am getting so stir crazy. I can't wait for school to start. I want to start my classes already! Only one month left!

Through you the world will change, not by you

A lot of people feel called to go on short term "mission" trips to help those in need, whether it is in your own back yard or half way across the world. These teams and groups are extremely amazing and help people like me so much. But there are a few things you might want to remember if you are going somewhere to help others

  1. You are a GUEST remember that
  2. If you are in a different culture understand that things are done differently. Even if it is the same culture, your way isn't always the right way.
  3. Communicate: with your team, your host, and the locals
  4. Commitment: if you say you're going to do something, do it.
  5. You're there to do mission,  not for a vacation. If you want vacation plan free time
  6. Understand before you leave what you're going to be doing
  7. Ask what the people need and what they think is possible for you to provide
  8. Just because one thing worked in your home and culture doesn't mean it will work in mine or that it is what I need/want
  9. Make connections with the locals
  10. Remember: enjoy yourself. You will often find that you are changed more by the people you're helping than vice versa

Two week update

Tomorrow marks the second week that mother and I have been in Nassau. I will admit it has been a stressful two weeks. I have helped with a VBS at fellow church as well as run VBS at our two churches. With it being the first time I have ever had any real control over I was nervous as can be. On top of that if consisted of 45 people, mostly young adults, from a different conference. Nothing seemed to go as planned and everything that could go wrong did. Murphy was working overtime. But it all was worthwhile when my youth told me how much fun they had and how they can't wait for next year. Even though it has been a crazy start I think that the Hosier family is going to make a big difference  in some lives.

Finding Grace in strange places

I was feeling discouraged and tired today, but I was reminded why I am here doing what I do. I met a girl named Grace. Within the hour we were having a heart to heart about mission, social justice, God and how we all fit into the mix. Being on this end of the spectrum I normally never see the outcome. I saw on her face how amazed she was at how young I am and all that I have done so far. It was so refreshing to see a fellow young woman so passionate about helping others. I hope to see her in the mission field or out in this big wide world one day. She truly lit the flame that was beginning to go out from a hard week at work. Thank you Grace.

We have touched down!

We have been here for about a week now. All is going well so far. Our VBS has started at Ascension and Coke Memorial Churches. My kids are amazing. We've had a few tears, mostly because the little ones have been overwhelmed, but every one seems to enjoy it. We have games, dancing, crafts and a hot meal for the kids before they leave. I will have pictures soon.
